Try your hand at learning a little Latin
About 65% of words in the English language are what we call Latinate, that is they are derived from Latin. A knowledge of Latin helps us to master our own language.
In Romance Languages such as Spanish and French the % of Latinate words is even higher so a knowledge of Latin helps us to learn these languages.
Latin is very useful in helping us to develop an understanding of how grammar works:
'I will say at once, quite firmly, that the best grounding for education is the Latin grammar..... simply because even a rudmentary knowledge of Latin cuts down the labor and pains of learning almost any other subject by at least 50 percent.' Dorothy Sayers, from the 'Lost Tools of Learning'
Latin is all around us not just in the words we speak but also in architecture, infrastructure and institutions.
